Fact or Fiction: The Relationship of the Scott Family of Medicine Hat to the Famous Explorer Captain James Cook

At the request of my good friend Gary Scott and consistent with my unabated enthusiasm for genealogical research, I began to research his family tree through the search capability of ancestry.ca. In a brief discussion concerning his antecedents, he indicated that his father was Earnest Scott (1898-1990) and that he knew very little about his family history but he went on to say that as a young boy he had been told that the Scott family was in some manner related to the famous explorer Captain James Cook. He also mentioned that his family was English and that they had originated from a place called Redcar, Yorkshire, England. With not much to go on, I decided to conduct research into the Scott family history.

This “matter of fact” revelation of a relationship to a famous world explorer naturally piqued my interest and I decided to endeavour to research and document this interesting story and determine whether or not such a revelation was fact or fiction.
