Your mentioning that the Canada/US border does not always align itself with the forty-ninth parallel reminds me of the joke about the Alberta resident who lived in a house that was ten feet north of the US border. One day he was informed by a representative of the US government that a surveying mistake had been made, and instead of being ten feet north of the border his house was ten feet south of the actual border, which means that he is living in Montana. The man replied he was very pleased to hear that because he didn’t want to live through another Alberta winter!
